Typology description - Supervisor

Approximately 13 % of supervisors (hereinafter ESTJ) is among the population. They usually are in close touch with reality, know well their surrounding – home one as well as working one.

For most of the time they do not trust their intuition and signals of their sentiments. Are proud of being able not to be duped easily, and that they do not fall for any advertising. Before they decide to engage in anything they normally do a survey.

In order to function successfully, they need good reasons and fixed procedures. The rule which governs them is 'better to be safe than sorry'. They like activities in which they see immediately tangible results. What they do not like is to translate abstract theories into practical acts. They are great organisers and natural managers in the sense of administrators or foremen who do not negotiate rather than natural leaders and apostles.

They know how to draw up procedures, put together detailed instructions and guides. With a bit of exaggeration it can be said that what they like the best are 'women-chefs' whom they, on the other hand, often want to adapt to their taste. They like when things are as they are supposed to be done – simply correctly. They do not have patience and understanding for those who do not pay adequate attention and care to those details of activities which, according to them, clearly stem from experience and knowledge of those who have done similar activities before them.

Thinking of ESTJ is hiererchic. They can set firm priorities which they follow. They deal with one thing after another according to importance. they honour hierarchy also in that they are loyal towards institutions to which they are pertaining to.

They are reliable and self-giving partners, employees or volunteers. The system of superiority and inferiority is clear to them, and it is not a problem for them to function in it – as a superior or inferior.

Because they think in the concepts of structures, they are able to pull off their instant interests in favour of higher purposes or general principles. They can make decisions sternly and also fulfil these decisions even if it should mean personal sacrifices on their side or on the side of others. ESTJ would never ask from others what they would not ask of themselves. The disadvantage of this strength can sometimes be the tendency to attach importance to commitments before privacy, which is welcomed at work but not often fully understood at home.

ESTJ are social, they are not avoiding parties, celebrations and other events where they talk in a light tone and are overflowing with jokes. They make no secret of their opinions, even if no one is asking them to.

Interestingly, the biggest differences in this type are between men and women. Men of this type are the most of all 'chaps'; their opinions and humour is distinctive and they can even categorise things.

They are assertive, practical, decisive and with strong attitudes; in short people who in our culture embody protectors and breadwinners. They should know that as little as they are mostly wrong about judgements they can be absolutely wrong about people's opinions.

No matter how is their woman counterpart usually without problems in respect of her femininity they can sometimes find themselves in an inner conflict between the role of decisive woman and gentle woman even adaptable wife or mother. Women of this type can more often than different types dedicate to certain traditionally male' activities. As equal opponents they can play tennis or play cards with men, sometimes go for a beer with them and they do not faint immediately when they hear a bit more rough vocabulary.

Their environment is continuity, foresight and organised character. Family, work and all the rest is for them something that needs to be controlled. They live in a world where work brings remuneration and an honest work is itself a value.
They can be tenacious, patient and they can work with great deal of bitterness. They will have a tendency to break each project into clearly arranged parts and sections which they will manage gradually. Such are their methods that they explain why they hate disruptions and surprises. Disturbances put them out of pace and rhythm, distract their dynamism and orientation. If their attention is driven away for a while it is not easy and obvious for them to start again where they stopped. In most cases they must go back somewhere to the beginning and go again through all steps already taken, they must adequately 'warm up' so that they can continue beyond the point in which they were disturbed.

ESTJ are visible as early as childhood. On one hand they protest and argue that they will not eat the liver or that they will not go to bed yet but on the other hand in the long run they respect the (and only this) person who forces them into this through his/her unquestioned authority. On the contrary, respect is lost by the person who pulls back and appears to be a 'pushover'. This can sometimes drive parents or employers crazy, however, ESTJ only verify whether indeed they can rely on people, including bosses, and whether these people are in their right place.
